Tasks

  • The development and maintenance of the SprachGIS information system on modern regional languages of German.
  • Providing tools for data integration of other workgroups.
  • Access and analysis tools for users of the information system.
  • In addition, the digital data of the project is managed, the users are supported with help and the hardware is set up and maintained.

Goals

  1. Development of a REDE project portal that presents the project and the research groups and that allows for the integration of the REDE information system SprachGIS.
  2. The REDE project portal is to be maintained by staff members.
  3. Building on the experience with the "Digitaler Wenker-Atlas" (DiWA), an information system is in development that optimally supports data integration and data analysis.
  4. The REDE Information System SprachGIS will provide a number of special tools to staff members that support data integration and management.
  5. The computer-assisted analysis of data is to be expanded compared to DiWA 3.
    • Dynamic queries for different attributes should be possible.
    • The queries should be displayed graphically as maps.
    • In addition to linguistic queries, geographical and historical queries should be possible.
    • The queries should be displayed as a map. The display depends on the result of the query and can also be modified by users.
    • We are assessing the possibilities of implementing various phonetic/linguistic comparison operators, e.g. dialectality measurements (phonetic distance measurement).
  6. The non-self-developed components of the information system are intended to consist of free and outstanding software projects in order to enable continual development throughout the entire span of the project. By engaging with these other projects, we can ensure their continued development on the one hand, and at the same time, the dissmenination of REDE.
  7. The user interface is intended to provide users with homogenous access to heterogeneous data, and allow users to largely determine the output. For this purpose, the system can, on the one hand, store different types of data, but classify it so as that the results of a dynamically created map are retrieved from different data sources.
  8. In addition to the possibility to recalculate existing data and generate maps from it, it will be possible to create completely new maps or to combine existing data with new ones. These new maps should be able to be stored in the system.
  9. Last but not least, with the information system, a multi-media platform is in development that also makes the extant audio data available to users. In addition, the audio data should be linked even more closely to the underlying research. By transcribing and georeferencing them, these data will be as searchable as atlasses, which are only available as text data; the results will also be audible.
